Paranormal Activity

There is much activity reported in the Gaol over the last few years. There have been many reports of a man with a hunched back, black teeth and curly bushy hair that lingers. He is believed to have once worked in the prison grounds.

Moans, apparitions and wheezing and poltergeist activity have all been witnessed at the jail by people visiting both in the daytime and through the night. People have been spooked when hearing footsteps around them and sounds of people in pain are heard when captured on EVP technology.

This certain will be a spooky place to investigate – ONLY FOR THE BRAVE!

Hexham Old Gaol opened in 1333 and is the oldest purpose-built prison in England. It was built for the prisoners of the Archbishop of York, who ruled over the local area then known as ‘Hexhamshire’. The Church did not agree with the death penalty, so after their trial, guilty prisoners would be fined or punished in Hexham Market Place. Prisoners at Hexham Gaol have included Border Reivers who were locked up here during Tudor times. They came from the local families on both sides of the English-Scottish Border. In 1550’s Dozens of the prisoners fell victim to the plague and dies within the walls.

The Old Gaol was used as a prison until the 1820s when it became a bank and solicitors’ office. Today Hexham Old Gaol is a Grade 1 listed building with a glass lift that allows visitors to explore all four floors of the Gaol.
